Lake Wylie

Located on a peninsula in York County, South Carolina, Lake Wylie is a suburb of the greater Charlotte Metro area. Just nineteen miles southwest of uptown Charlotte, North Carolina, this is an ideal location for lake living near all the big city conveniences. Situated on the state line between North and South Carolina, approximately 12,000 people live in the lovely community along the shores and well-designed neighborhoods.

Lake Wylie, a reservoir named for Dr. Gil Wylie, is part of the tributary of the Catawba River Basin. Developed in the 1960’s, Lake Wylie saw growth as younger families were attracted to the area by lower taxes and convenient local schools.

Due to the location of this idyllic lake community, water activities abound just steps from your back door. With waterfront parks, nature trails and programs at the McDowell Nature Center, families can find year-round fresh air fun. Nearby Fort Mill and Rock Hill offer historic sites to explore, and uptown Charlotte offers many art, history and science museums.

Home to the Carolina Panthers, Charlotte Knights, Charlotte Checkers, and Charlotte Hornets, there are endless opportunities to cheer on your new favorite teams. Love motor sports? You’re in luck, as the NASCAR Hall of Fame is located in Charlotte, and the Charlotte Motor Speedway is just up the highway in Concord, North Carolina. For outdoor enthusiasts, Lake Wylie offers fishing, boating and watersport opportunities year-round. The Anne Springs Close Greenway, a nature preserve of 2,300 acres of lakes, forests, and pastures offers trails for hiking, biking, and horseback riding. The U.S. National Whitewater Center, located in Charlotte, offers family fun for all ages and interests, including rafting, kayaking, wall climbing, ropes courses and outdoor concerts in the summer. Daniel Stowe Botanical Gardens, seventeen miles to the west, is a nearly 400 acre botanical delight, with gardens, orchid greenhouses, and sculptures for picture worthy strolls.

Lake Wylie enjoys a true four-season climate, with typically mild winters and sultry summers. This means residents can comfortably spend their weekends enjoying the lake year-round.

The Clover School District includes 11 PreK-12 public schools. The Goddard School is nearby and serves the Lake Wylie area, along with many private and charter schools in the Charlotte metro area. York Tech Community College offers many certification programs and two-year degrees, and Winthrop University boasts a diverse and close-knit campus experience. With many degree programs and scholarship opportunities, this university provides an excellent educational experience. There are several universities within the Charlotte Metro area, such as UNC-Charlotte, Queens University, Johnson C. Smith University and more.

Health care is always close by, with Atrium Health and Novant Health care systems offering several convenient locations of hospitals and specialty offices. Nearby Charlotte is home to many notable specialized health care centers as well.

Lake Wylie features over 325 miles of shoreline with seven public marinas and three private yacht clubs. There are twelve Lower Lake Wylie public access areas. In late spring and summer, the bumper crop of strawberries and peaches from local orchards supply the region with delicious fruit, ice cream, and jams
