Located in both York and Lancaster Counties in South Carolina, Fort mill is a fast-growing town of approximately 9,500 residents, with nearly 35,000 residing within the urban area. Just nineteen miles south of uptown Charlotte, North Carolina, ten miles east of the banks of Lake Wylie, and seven miles north of Rock Hill, this is an ideal location for beautiful and convenient commuter neighborhoods.
Location
History
The town of Fort Mill, named for its location between two points, the British fort and Webb’s Mill, was established in 1873. The Catawba Indians lived in this region and made the area which became Fort Mill their home for many years. Settled by Scots-Irish immigrants in the mid-1700’s, the town began to grow rapidly in the industrial age with textile mills. Graced by several historic homes on the National Register of Historic Places, Fort Mill’s rich history is embraced and celebrated.

Due to the location of this idyllic town, Fort Mill offers many of the large city perks close by while maintaining its small-town neighborhood ease of living. Fort Mill boasts a small History museum devoted to town history, while uptown Charlotte offers many art, history and science museums. Kids of all ages love Carowinds Theme Park, with the thrill rides and water park offering a fun-filled active day. The park also offers concerts and seasonal activities, such as Scare-o-winds during Halloween.

Home to the Carolina Panthers, Charlotte Knights, Charlotte Checkers, Charlotte Hornets, and the Prime Time Players, there are endless opportunities to cheer on your new favorite teams. Love motor sports? You’re in luck, as the NASCAR Hall of Fame is located in Charlotte, and the Charlotte Motor Speedway is just up the highway in Concord, North Carolina. Many of the racing teams call this area home and offer tours and career opportunities.
For outdoor enthusiasts, The Anne Springs Close Greenway, a nature preserve of 2,300 acres of lakes, forests, and pastures offers trails for hiking, biking, and horseback riding. Lake Wylie is a short drive away and offers fishing, boating and watersport opportunities year-round. The U.S. National Whitewater Center, located in Charlotte, offers family fun for all ages and interests, including rafting, kayaking, wall climbing, ropes courses and outdoor concerts in the summer. Daniel Stowe Botanical Gardens, seventeen miles to the west, is a nearly 400 acre botanical delight, with gardens, orchid greenhouses, and sculptures for picture worthy strolls.
General Information
Fort Mill enjoys a true four-season climate, although winters are typically mild and summers humid. The Fort Mill Schools include 16 excellent rated public schools, 27 pre-schools, and 28 private schools. York Tech Community College offers many certification programs and two-year degrees, and Winthrop University boasts a diverse and close-knit campus experience. With many degree programs and scholarship opportunities, this university provides an excellent educational experience.
Health care is always close by, with Atrium Health and Novant Health care systems offering several convenient locations of hospitals and specialty offices. Nearby Charlotte is home to many notable specialized health care centers as well.
Fun Facts
Fort Mill is home to the Carolina Crown Drum and Bugle Corps, winners of the 2013 Drum Corps International championship. In late spring and summer, the bumper crop of strawberries and peaches from local orchards supply the region with delicious fruit, ice cream, and jams.
